Immigration Enforcement in Chicago

CMSA’s Statement on Immigration Enforcement in Chicago

As an organization dedicated to uplifting and supporting Chicago’s LGBTQIA+ community, we recognize the heightened concerns surrounding recent federal immigration enforcement actions and their impact on our members. Chicago’s sanctuary city policies impact many communities, including LGBTQIA+ individuals. While immigration enforcement policies may change, CMSA remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment where our members feel safe, informed, and supported.

Our Stance

We stand firmly against policies that create fear and uncertainty among marginalized communities, particularly those within the LGBTQIA+ population who may face unique vulnerabilities. Our commitment to inclusivity, advocacy, and support remains steadfast as we work to address these challenges.

What This Means for CMSA

Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance ensures that local law enforcement does not cooperate with federal immigration authorities in civil immigration matters. However, recent changes in federal policy allows ICE to conduct enforcement operations even in sanctuary cities like Chicago. Public spaces such as parks and potentially sensitive locations like community centers or schools may be affected. While some CMSA venues could be impacted, we remain committed to protecting the privacy and safety of those who use our services.

Your Rights in Public and Sensitive Spaces

  • Public Spaces (e.g., parks): ICE can operate in public areas but cannot detain individuals without reasonable suspicion or probable cause. You have the right to remain silent and are not required to disclose your immigration status.
  • Sensitive Locations (e.g., community centers, schools): ICE generally needs a warrant signed by a judge to enter these spaces. Our community centers and other non-public venues may be safe spaces, but it is important to stay informed about your rights and legal protections in these situations. We encourage you to reach out to us if you have questions or concerns.

For more detailed information about your rights, please visit the City of Chicago’s resource page for immigrants and refugees: https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/mayor/supp_info/office-of-new-americans/resource-flyers-for-new-americans.html.

Additionally, the Illinois Department of Human Services offers immigrant and refugee resources, which can be found here: https://www.dhs.state.il.us/page.aspx?item=124289&utm_source=chatgpt.com
